Our Institute: A Supportive Environment
We want you to feel at home at our university and in the Erlangen / Nuremberg area. Our departmental coordinator supports you in all questions concerning studying at our department. The university’s Central Office of International Affairs organizes an extensive programme of activities that support you in organizational matters and help you to quickly integrate into German student life. Before the beginning of each semester an orientation course (Orientierungskurs) helps you with the bureaucratic parts of your stay and provides the first opportunity to meet other international and German students. During the semester the university’s international leisure-time programme (Kultur- und Freizeitprogramm) offers trips to German cities, movie nights, sports and cultural events.

The Institut für Theater- und Medienwissenschaft was founded in 1996. The faculty consists of distinguished scholars and experienced practitioners. Research and teaching at the department are characterized by an interdisciplinary and comparative approach. The aesthetics, histories and theories of the performing arts and visual media are studied together. Teaching and research at the department thus aim at a better understanding of interdependencies between performative and visual practices in their historical and cultural contexts.

Believing that a combination of theory and practice is highly productive and helps students to think creatively, undergraduate education in our BA programme Theater- und Medienwissenschaft (Theatre and Media Studies) integrates the academic study of the performing arts and media with production work in performance, video, film and audio media.

Our graduate programmes are strongly research-oriented. The MA programme in Theater- und Medienwissenschaft (Theatre and Media Studies) invites students to deepen their understanding of the performing arts and media in their historical, cultural and social contexts. The programme is offered with two focuses: Students may either specialize in Theatricality and Performative Cultures or in Visuality and Visual Cultures. The MA programme in Theaterpädagogik (Theatre Pedagogy) is intended for students interested in cultural education and the educational potential of the performing arts. Our PhD programme offers opportunities for independent research. Doctoral students are supported on an individual base. PhD candidates may focus exclusively on either Theatre Studies or Media Studies.

Education and research at the Institut für Theater- und Medienwissenschaft generally focus on the histories, theories and analysis of the performing arts, theatre, digital media, film, TV and photography. More specifically, faculty’s areas of specialization include:

  • Theatricality
  • Performance and Performativity
  • 20th Century European Theatre and Culture
  • Contemporary Theatre
  • Performance Art
  • Theatre Therapy and Pedagogy
  • Visual Cultures
  • Film and TV
  • Photography
  • Media Historiography
  • Media and Memory.
